Matthew

"Are you lonesome tonight," he sang in my ear,

We danced and brought in the festive New Year.

He knew all of the words, thanked me for the dance,

Said it's what he needed, 'twas my last chance.

He slowly stopped eating became weak and pale,

The strong singing dancer was now sick and frail.

I brought him the sweets he once loved and fed him,

He grew weaker and the outlook was dim.

He wanted a recorder to sing that song,

Although he tried hard the words were all wrong.

I tried to hide the tears, he patted my hand,

Said, "play this and smile, it's a special song."

I sat at his bedside his frail hand in mine,

Knew I had to let go, I knew it was time.

Wanted to be selfish yet said "its ok,"

He took his last breath my tears slipped away.

He wasn't my father, or brother or beau,

He is the reason to nursing homes we go.

To make a difference in the precious life,

Of your father, mother, brother or wife.

When family can't be there we hold them instead,

Give them reason to live, at night kiss their head.

We aren't here 'cause we lack what it takes elsewhere,

Nor to make money, we're here 'cause we care.

"Are you lonesome tonight," he sang in my ear,

As we danced and brought in the festive New Year.

He knew all of the words thanked me for the dance,

Said it's what he needed, 'twas my last chance.
